Mauritius sub Saharan Africa’s most competitive economy according to the latest publication of the Global Competitiveness Index 2016 – 2017 of the World Economic Forum.

 

Mauritius was ranked number 45 out of 138 countries moving up a step from last year’s report.  This shows that Mauritius continues to consolidate its lead in the Sub Saharan region for the fourth consecutive year.

 

The Global Competitiveness Report assess the competitiveness landscape, therefore providing insight into the drivers of their productivity and prosperity.  As a result, it gives an index on the level of competitiveness of a country.

 

This Report is compiled from 114 indicators, categorised into 12 pillars of competitiveness in three sub-indices: basic requirements, efficiency enhancers, and innovation and sophistication.

 

In addition, the report showed that the overall quality of infrastructure has improved in Mauritius. The country benefits from a favourable fiscal situation on a macroeconomic environment level.  The high savings rate and an inflation rate is under control. Mauritius’s credit rating has also improved from 60^thposition in 2015 to 57^th this year.

 

Furthermore, the country benefits from its excellent health services and quality of education system as well as the availability of research and training services. Mauritius advances in the goods market efficiency pillar due to the extent of market dominance and high prevalence of foreign ownership in businesses and trade barriers.

 

Finally, Mauritius does well in the innovation sector moving from 78^th to 67^th place in 2016. The country’s competitiveness has further enhanced by improvements in its innovation ecosystem such as increased company-level spending on Research and Development and capacity for innovation.
